About the artist:

Ben Goodman’s work focuses primarily on portraiture and the human body. He uses the reduction method to produce intricate wood engravings that resemble miniature paintings. The human figure is a constant inspiration for Goodman’s work and he uses engraving to explore the variety and beauty of the human form; from the subtle shadows running up a person’s back, to the complex structure of the human face.

Over recent years, Goodman has developed a unique approach to wood engraving that lies somewhere between printmaking and painting. Many of his prints contain 15 or more layers and the technique allows him to work alla prima (wet on wet) without the need for previous layers to dry.

Goodman’s work is in major international collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum and Central Academy of Fine Arts, Bejing. He has recently been awarded the Rachel Reckitt Prize at the Golsoncott Foundation.
